In our last article, we talked about Milchel’s 7 Core Values. We explored what they are and why they matter in the Milchel community. We also shared how these values are taught, practised, and nurtured in our Milchelians.
At the end of that article, we mentioned something important. Before students can fully develop the 7 Core Values, they also need certain traits to support them. These traits help them learn better. They also help them grow with more purpose and understanding.
In this article, we will talk about Milchel’s 5 Key Traits. These are Awareness, Discipline, Responsibility, Perseverance, and Confidence.
Awareness is the ability to understand oneself and others. It helps students notice their thoughts, feelings, and actions. It also helps them become more sensitive to the people around them. When students are aware, they can make better choices. They can also respond to situations with more care.
Discipline is the ability to control oneself. It means following rules, routines, and good principles. It also means being organised and systematic. At Milchel, discipline is important because students live in a shared community. They need to follow schedules, respect boundaries, and do what is expected of them.
Responsibility means being accountable for one’s actions. It means fulfilling duties and taking ownership of consequences. Responsible students do not always wait to be reminded. Instead, they learn to do their part. They take care of their tasks, their belongings, and their role in the community.
Perseverance means continuing even when things are difficult. It is the ability to stay determined despite challenges. Students may face setbacks in school, friendships, or personal goals. However, perseverance teaches them not to give up too easily. It reminds them that growth often takes time and effort.
Confidence means believing in one’s abilities. It is having healthy self-esteem and the courage to express ideas. A confident student is not someone who is loud or proud. Rather, it is someone who knows that they can try, improve, and contribute. Confidence helps students speak up, take part, and face challenges with hope.

These 5 Key Traits are relatively easier to develop. In fact, most students who come to Milchel already have these traits in some way. Some may already be responsible. Some may already show confidence. Others may have discipline or perseverance, even if they still need guidance.
At Milchel, we help develop and refine these traits along the way. We do this through daily routines, reminders, activities, and real-life experiences. Little by little, students learn how to use these traits in their daily lives.
The 5 Key Traits come first. They are simpler traits that help Milchelians develop the 7 Core Values. For example, a student needs awareness to show compassion. A student needs discipline to practise integrity. A student needs responsibility to live with effort and leadership. In this way, the traits and values work together.
Therefore, Milchel’s 5 Key Traits and 7 Core Values go hand in hand. The traits prepare the students. The values guide them. Together, they help form Milchelians who are not only better students, but also better people.
In the end, our goal is not only to teach rules or routines. Our goal is to help students grow from within. We want them to understand themselves, care for others, and make good choices. We want them to face challenges with strength and confidence.
As Milchelians continue their journey with us, we hope these 5 Key Traits will become part of who they are. We hope these traits will help them live out Milchel’s 7 Core Values in school, in the hostel, and even beyond Milchel.
